Is Ohio really going to hurt Michigan gaming?

Well today the new Hollywood Casino opened in Toledo, Ohio. I have a few email alerts set up to let me know when there is a new article on Michigan poker or just Michigan gambling in general. Lately my inbox box has been just exploding with alerts and they are all saying the same thing. They are all about how much the new Ohio casinos are going hurt any neighboring state so bad. That gambling in states like Michigan are going to suffer so much.

Here is an excerpt from an article on one website:

This spring marks the opening of casinos in Ohio, and neighboring states are already predicting the damage that this will cause their own gambling markets. Until now, states have managed to report revenues of up to $1 billion from Ohio residents who regularly cross the border to play at Pennsylvania casinos and Michigan card tables, not to mention the entertaining riverboats of Indiana.

One more from same article:

The potential damage to neighboring states is worrying for many

Here is an excerpt from a article on a different website:

The opening of casinos in Ohio this spring means the luck is running out for neighboring states that have pulled in an estimated $1 billion each year from gamblers who’ve been crossing the border to wager at riverboats in Indiana, gaming tables in Michigan and casinos in western Pennsylvania.

Now is it just me or does some of this seem way over blown, I know we get gamblers coming into Michigan from Ohio but is it really that many that the casinos are worrying about the damage? I do see that Hollywood Casino is going to have a poker room, there website gives very little details about it, but do any of you think that the poker rooms are going to take that big of a hit?

I really don’t know it just seems like people are way over estimating how many of the people in the Michigan casinos and cards rooms are from Ohio. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

  • I always find it funny when people talk about how opening a new business will cause so much harm and damage. What’s wrong with giving customers more of a choice?! Isn’t that the point of our economy: to give people more choices?! Also, I don’t know how many Michigan poker players – or even gamblers in general – are going to spend $20+ to visit a casino when there’s plenty of casinos in this state that are much closer and don’t use up as much gas to visit.

Besides, maybe this is just me but when I go to the casino or poker rooms, the good majority of customers are people from in-state. I think this is just blown out of proportion.
